Prednisolone tablets and liquid: steroid medicine

A group of steroids called mineralocorticoids (including fludrocortisone and hydrocortisone) are sometimes used to treat adrenal crisis. Steroid medications, including glucocorticoids, are often prescribed to treat a range of conditions. But some forms of steroids can weaken your bones – increasing your risk of osteoporosis and broken bones.

• It is used to help reduce the symptoms of asthma, such as wheeze.
• However, when administered for prolonged periods or repeatedly during pregnancy, corticosteroids may increase the risk of intra-uterine growth retardation.
• The classic toxic effects of prednisolone like drugs are given under adverse reactions.
• Deuterated prednisolone (D6) and cortisol (D4) are used as the internal standards.
• This means your body has problems making enough of a hormone called cortisol.

You won’t be able to have steroid creams or gels if you have an infection that affects your skin. Some other skin problems, such as rosacea, acne and ulcers, can be made worse by steroid creams so you might not be able to take them if you have any of these conditions. Prednisolone tablets and liquid

A few products do not have a marketing authorisation (licence) as a medicine and therefore there is no PIL. If your child does have chicken pox, their steroid doses may need to be stopped. Although children are usually given the chicken pox vaccine, if your child is receiving high-dose steroids we recommend siblings or other close family members have it.

Avoid close contact with people who’ve recently had live vaccines taken by mouth (oral vaccines) such as oral polio or the typhoid vaccine. Always tell other doctors, nurses, pharmacists or dentists that you’re having this treatment. For example, if you need treatment for anything else, including teeth problems. There is evidence that steroid drugs may come through into your breast milk.

Teratogenic effects of glucocorticoids have not been demonstrated in the human. Although malignancies are known to arise in patients undergoing immunosuppression with corticosteroids, any role of these compounds in the induction of tumours remain uncertain. The classic toxic effects of prednisolone like drugs are given under adverse reactions.

Is there anything else I need to know about this medicine?

Avoid contact with people who have chicken pox or shingles, even if you have had these infections in the past – they could be serious if you have lymphoma and are on steroids. Tell your doctor straightaway if you think you could have chicken pox or shingles. Be aware of any signs of infection and seek medical advice straightaway if you notice any.

Prednisone and prednisolone (10 mg) were rapidly absorbed achieving Tmax at 1 hour. The 8h levels were 37 mg/l and 35 mg/l for prednisone and prednisolone respectively. The area-under-the-curve for prednisone and prednisolone was 830.6 mg.h/l and 820.5 mg.h/l, equating to a bioavailability of 101.2%. Terminal half-life was comparable at 2.65h and 2.93h for prednisone and prednisolone respectively.

Side-effects and risks

Protecting your bones

Patients and/or carers should be warned that potentially severe psychiatric adverse reactions may occur with systemic steroids (see section 4.8). Symptoms typically emerge within a few days or weeks of starting the treatment. Risks may be higher with high doses/systemic exposure (see section 4.5), although dose levels do not allow prediction of the onset, type, severity or duration of reactions. Most reactions recover after either dose reduction or withdrawal, although specific treatment may be necessary.

Some people who take steroid tablets or injected steroids long term, may find they put on weight and notice they develop a “moon-shaped” face. This is a symptom of a condition called Cushing’s syndrome, linked to taking high doses of steroids.

How often do you have steroids?

Take them exactly as your doctor, nurse or pharmacist explains. Do not stop taking them without talking to your doctor first. Treatment for steroid-induced diabetes will depend on your own individual situation.
